“If the ladder is not leaning against the right wall, every step we take gets us to the wrong place faster” Stephen Covey
This long weekend couldn’t have come at a better time… Since returning from the US I have been working like a demon saying YES to every opportunity and feeling busier and more ‘successful’ than ever. I hadn’t taken 5 minutes to stop and contemplate all this activity and where it is all heading.
Well, I had this chance on Saturday morning and despite some brilliant opportunities to present, write, organise events and undertake interviews I was the most misaligned I’d been in some time. I diverted key resources (time & energy) from our core business and as a result we have struggled. I was ‘busy’ doing a lot but very little of what I had done utilised my unique strengths to make progress in both the company vision and my personal mission.
Self-reflection is paramount in business and in life. You really need to take an honest introspective look at your life on a regular basis and determine if you are making the right decisions to realise your future aspirations.
Is ego, busyness or ambiguity over your vision clouding your judgement? Have you confused your message and what you stand for? Are your actions contradicting your values?
I was so ‘busy’ doing that I sacrificed time to reflect on the bigger picture. Are you scheduling regular time for self-appraisal? Are you auditing your actions daily to ensure there is congruency to the ‘Grand’ plan?
Upon reflection of this experience, there are two changes I will be now incorporating:
1. Regular structured reflection time
2. A delay between a request and an answer. Opportunities need to be measured. This takes time.
A step back backward is necessary to ensure you are moving forward in the right direction.
